TATTOO FAQ

How old do I have to be to get a tattoo?

The law says you have to be 18. NO EXCEPTIONS, including parental or guardian consent. You will also need to provide photo ID before you get your tattoo.

Tattoo's Over 18

Does it hurt?

It varies from person to person. Some find the process quite uncomfortable and others actually like it. The most common response from first timers is, "Is that all" and they almost seem disappointed!

Either way, our artists will look after you and make your experience as enjoyable as possible.

What happens when I get a tattoo?

Firstly, you must complete and sign a consent form and provide photo ID.

Your artist will then prepare the area of skin that is to be tattooed. This includes cleaning with an antiseptic solution and shaving to ensure the skin is smooth and clean.

A temporary stencil of your tattoo will then be applied to your skin. You can then check to make sure the position and size of the tattoo is just right before the tattoo process begins. Your artist will then begin applying the ink.

When your tattoo is finished it will be dressed and covered with a clear plastic wrap to protect it from infection while initial healing begins.

Your artist will explain how to care for your new tattoo and you will be given an after care pack containing clear instructions, a business card and a Chupa Chup!

Tattoo Aftercare

How much does it cost?

We can give you a fixed price for many tattoos but for complex or larger designs we quote an hourly rate.

We prefer you to come into the studio so we can discuss your tattoo in person. Our artists can then give you an estimate of the cost and time involved in creating your tattoo and ensure you get exactly what you want.

You can also email your design to us with all relevant details such as size, location, colour or greywash etc and we can give you an estimate. Email quotes will need to be confirmed in person when you come into the studio.

Note: Quotes cannot be given over the phone.

Tattooing Close up

Do I need my own artwork or can you draw up a design for me?

Sacred Skin specialises in custom tattoos so you can either bring in your own artwork or we can create your tattoo from scratch.

Bring in an existing image, a rough sketch or even just an idea and we will take it from there.

There is a small fee for custom artwork but it's a small price to pay for having a unique tattoo.

If you are looking for inspiration for a new tattoo, Google Images is a great place to start. www.google.com

You can save the images and either print them out or
email them to us.

Tattoo Designs

Other places to look for artwork are magazines and books. You can even draw a rough sketch. Don't be embarrassed about your hand drawn artwork. We can see what you have in mind even from a very basic sketch.

It's important to remember that you don't have to find the perfect design. Because we can do custom artwork, you just need to find a design that is close to what you want.

How sterile is Sacred Skin?

We take health and safety seriously in our studios to ensure that you have a clean, sterile and safe tattoo experience.

As necessary, tattoo and piercing staff have completed the Infection Control Certificate that is a legal requirement for working in this industry.

Piercing Steriliser

We use disposable needles, ink caps, gloves, paper towels etc. All items that require sterilisation are processed through a hospital grade steam autoclave.

Our autoclave is serviced and certified regularly.

Our studios are health department certified.

PIERCING FAQ

What is the legal age to get a piercing in Queensland?

In Queensland it is illegal to pierce the genitals (including nipples) of someone under 18. There are no exceptions including parental or guardian consent.

You will need to provide photo ID proving your age ie. Drivers Licence, 18+ card or Passport.

Other than genital piercings, if you are under 18, our studio policy is that you need parental or guardian consent. You parent or guardian will need to come into the studio with you to sign the consent form.

PLEASE NOTE: For all under 18 piercings we reserve the right to refuse to pierce anyone if we feel it is not appropriate. This is determined on a case by case basis.

Do you use a piercing gun or a needle?

All piercings are performed using an individual, sterilised, single use needle.

We do not use a piercing gun for any piercing.

A gun uses the jewellery to force its way through the skin leaving a rough hole, which can cause potential difficulties during healing.

We always recommend the use of a needle for your piercing. A needle is very sharp and will quickly and easily push through leaving a clean hole which can heal easily.

Single Use Piercing Needles

Can I bring my own jewellery?

We cannot use your own jewellery due to sterilisation requirements.

We use Surgical Stainless Steel for all initial piercings. This metal is the same that is used in medical procedures as it has proven to cause the least allergic reactions in most people.

The stainless steel jewellery needs to stay in for about 7-8 weeks. This time allows the piercing to heal sufficiently before you change to your choice of jewellery.

We cannot use gold for your initial piercings as it turns black when autoclaved!

Remember, always use quality jewellery in your piercings. Cheap jewellery (in particular cheap plated jewellery) is a common cause of piercing infections and other problems.

Does it hurt?

Getting a piercing is not painless, however, it is not as uncomfortable as you might expect and is quite bearable. It only takes a second to push the needle thought and it's all over.

Everyone is different, so don't always believe what someone else says about getting a piercing. Just because they had a particular experience does not mean that yours will be the same.

Our piercer is very considerate and will ensure that you get the most comfortable piercing experience we can provide.

Don't let fear prevent you from getting the piercing you have always wanted.

What happens when I get a piercing?

You will first need to complete and sign a consent form. You will also need to show us your photo ID.

The piercer will clean the area to be pierced.

The actual piercing process will vary slightly depending on the type of piercing you are having.

A typical procedure involves marking with a pen where the needle will go.

A clamp or receiving tube is set in place. The needle is quickly pushed through and removed leaving a plastic sleeve. The jewellery is guided into the piercing through the plastic sleeve.

If necessary, a cream or spray will be applied to soothe the piercing and wrapped with a protective cover.

The piercer will explain how to care for your piercing while it is healing. We will also give you printed aftercare instructions to ensure that you don't forget what to do.
